A Halloween scavenger hunt is easier to run when every clue has a clear answer, each hiding place is safe, and the route does not send guests through the same doorway at once. This ready-made hunt includes 31 clues for adults and teens, plus a shorter 12-clue route for apartments and small parties. The clues use ordinary household locations, so you can set everything up without buying themed props.

Before you hide the clues

  • Choose 8–15 clues for a 20- to 40-minute hunt.
  • Remove any clue whose answer does not exist in your space.
  • Keep bedrooms, medicine cabinets, offices, vehicles, stairs, and locked storage off-limits.
  • Place clues at eye level or easy reaching height—never inside appliances or near heat, water, tools, or chemicals.
  • For teams, create staggered starting clues so everyone does not rush to the same spot.

A 12-clue apartment route

Use clues 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 25, and 31. This route stays within shared living spaces and usually takes 15–25 minutes. For two teams, start one team at clue 1 and the other at clue 12, then number each team’s cards in a different colour.

Three ways to run the hunt

Cooperative hunt

Everyone solves one trail together. This is best for mixed ages, smaller homes, and groups that prefer conversation over speed.

Team race without running

Teams earn one point per solved clue and one bonus point for returning with every card. State clearly that walking is required and unsafe shortcuts lose a point.

Photo-only hunt

Instead of hiding paper, give teams a list of safe seasonal photos to take: something orange, a shadow shaped like an animal, three people making a pumpkin face, or an object that looks mysterious from close up. Never photograph strangers or private information.

Make the hunt harder for adults and teens

Remove the answer labels, combine two clues before revealing the next location, or add a simple code. For example, circle one letter on each solved card and let the final letters spell the finish location. Keep the puzzle challenging through wordplay—not by hiding cards in unsafe or private places.
